Air Filter Header

Air FiltersAir filter:

It is difficult to give a specific time or mileage where it becomes necessary to change and air filter, since its condition depends on how much dust and dirt it has ingested. A filter that lasts 30,000 miles (40,000 km) in a vehicle mostly driven on streets and avenues, may last only a month or two in a rural environment where it is often driven on unpaved roads. Experts recommend replacing you air filter annually or every 20,000 miles for city drivers, and every 9 months or less for rural drivers.

However, regardless of mileage or time, an air filter should be replaced before it reaches the point where it begins to significantly restrict airflow. But exactly when that point is reached it is subject to review.

A slightly dirty filter actually cleans more efficiently than a new filter. This is because the debris trapped by the filter helps keep smaller particles that attempts to pass. But eventually, every filter reaches the point where it becoems so clogged that it creates a drop in pressure and restricts airflow. If a dirty filter is not replaced it directly affects fuel economy, vehicle performance and emissions.

Some heavy duty vehicles have a meter that monitors and alerts via a signal on the dashboard when the filter is dirty and needs to be changed . But given the lack of such a device in the car, it is best to change it according to your opinion and what is recommend above.

If you remove the filter and examine it you can tell how dirty it is. If you have a layer of dirt, it obviously needs to be changed. Never try to shake or blow the dust or dirt--it is a waste of time because many particles are already stuck in the filter fibers. (Unless it is a washable cotton filter)
